  • CVT updated for quicker response and more refined driving experience
  • Real Time All-Wheel Drive with Intelligent Control™ updated for higher torque capacity, quicker engagement
  • New Snow Mode for enhanced handling in slick driving conditions
  • CR-V-first Hill Descent Control

All New 4th-generation Two-Motor Hybrid System
CR-V Sport and Sport Touring feature an all-new more advanced two-motor hybrid system. With 247 torque, a 15 lb.-ft. improvement (+6.5%) over the predecessor, the new CR-V delivers greater performance than previous
CR-Vs.

A newly refined 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine, now with direct fuel injection, is mated to a pair of larger and more powerful electric motors which are now mounted side-by-side rather than in-line with the engine crankshaft as in previous generations.

The new arrangement also includes new high- and low-speed lockup ratios for direct engine drive on the highway and in the city. This improves responsiveness for a sportier driving feel and creates a more relaxed driving environment at highway speeds. It also allows for a higher sustained top speed, improves fuel efficiency and enables up to 1,000 pounds of towing. The system's combined output is 204 hp 1.

The new traction motor spins at 14,500 rpm and produces 181 horsepower. The generator motor, which spins at 17,000 rpm, puts out 161 horsepower, and is dedicated to charging the battery pack.

Quietness has been improved during idling and power generation by incorporating a pre-damper into the flywheel that reduces torque fluctuations from the engine, suppressing vibration at low rpm/low torque speeds.

The new Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) containing the battery pack and its controlling hardware is smaller and lighter. The smaller size of the IPU allowed for the cooling fan to be fully integrated into the unit, rather than externally mounted, reducing noise 13%.

The Power Control Unit (PCU) housed under the hood has 8% more maximum output and current. It also has a lower profile, which allows for the use of a larger resonator for the engine intake to reduce noise. A new downsized DC cable with aluminum stranded wire weighs 46% less.

The new hybrid system also incorporates Linear Shift Control, which creates the vehicle speed-linked engine rev feel of a conventional drivetrain shifting gears at wide open throttle for a more exhilarating driving experience.

A new "B" transmission setting enables stronger regenerative and engine braking, up to 0.09G. This enables CR-V to be driven in a "one pedal" style that is common among battery-electric vehicles. In addition, the levels of deceleration available through the deceleration selector paddles on the steering wheel are more distinct.

The new hybrid-electric system also allows for a substantial increase in continuous maximum speed—which climbs from 86 mph to 115 mph.

Moreover, for the first time, a CR-V hybrid model is available with front-wheel drive. The CR-V Sport is available with front or all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is standard on the CR-V Sport Touring.

  1. Total system horsepower as measured by the peak, concurrent output of the two electric motors and gasoline engine using ISO-compliant method.

Direct Injected 2.0-liter Atkinson-Cycle Engine
The new two-motor hybrid system also features an updated 2.0-liter DOHC 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine with improved power, refinement and environmental performance. Since the gasoline engine can be decoupled from the rest of the hybrid powertrain, it only operates as needed, depending on the state of battery charge and other parameters.

Peak engine output improves to 145 horsepower (SAE net at 6,100 rpm) and 138 lb.-ft. of torque (SAE net at 4,500 rpm), gains of 2 hp and 9 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2.0-liter is the first Honda engine for the North American market to combine high-pressure direct-injection with multistage injection for an extremely homogeneous mixture that delivers clean combustion. It also improves the stoichiometric area of the engine at higher loads by up to 30% and improves the heat efficiency of the engine to nearly 41%. To control high exhaust gas temperatures, the cylinder head uses a new two-piece water jacket, new gas-cooling exhaust ports and a large capacity cooled EGR valve.

Critical to the operation of the Atkinson cycle is a lightweight DOHC cylinder head, with Variable Timing Control (VTC) on the intake cam used to continuously adjust the intake cam phase.

To further reduce emissions, a new low-temperature active catalyst with a low level of noble metals, drops NOx emissions by 24%, and total hydrocarbon emissions by 22%, giving the CR-V hybrids a LEV3 SULEV 30 rating.

The engine also features a more rigid crankshaft and secondary balancer to reduce vibration. A new all-urethane engine cover reduces noise from the new direct-injection system. For the first time in a Honda, a new insulator using theta fiber cell technology, a lightweight fiber-foam-material highly resistant to heat and vibration, is employed on the rear of the engine.

More information about the Honda two-motor hybrid system is available here.

Refined 1.5-Liter Turbo Powertrain on EX and EX-L
The updated and refined direct-injected 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine under the hood of EX and EX-L grades demonstrates that even as Honda heads into the electrified era, the company continues to make important improvements in the efficiency and performance of its internal combustion engine technology.

Multiple enhancements to the 1.5-liter turbo provide a more refined driving experience and enhanced power delivery. Running on regular unleaded gas, the engine produces 190 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm (SAE net) and maintains peak power over a broader range at high revs than before. Its 179 lb.-ft. (SAE net) peak torque spans 1,700-5,000 rpm, arriving 300-rpm earlier than before for a more responsive feel.

VTEC variable valve timing is now used on the exhaust side of the twin-cam head. This helps improve exhaust efficiency and optimizing valve overlap, efforts that contribute to improved fuel efficiency. It also helps lower the engine speed for peak torque. More information about the benefits of VTEC is available here.

For emissions, a new catalytic converter that minimizes the use of rare metals is used, helping CR-V achieve LEV3 SULEV 30 emissions certification (ULEV 50 with AWD). Further aiding fuel efficiency and reducing emissions is a new idle-stop system that turns off the engine at stoplights.

Improving acceleration response is a high-efficiency high-response turbocharger and low pressure-loss turbocharger piping. The turbocharger now routes exhaust gas diagonally to the turbine wheel, and the turbine blades also have been reshaped, helping the turbocharger generate pressure in a wider range of engine speeds and more efficiently.

The exhaust manifold is now a 4-into-2 design, which consolidates the exhaust from the number 1 and 4 cylinders into one port, and the number 2 and 3 cylinders in a separate port. This reduces exhaust pulse interference, improving intake and exhaust efficiency, especially at low engine speeds.

Engine noise has been significantly reduced by a new high-rigidity crankshaft and oil pan, and a new intake cover. Further noise reduction measures include noise-absorbing engine mounts and a new muffler redesigned from a J-turn structure to an S-turn.

More information about the Honda 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is available here.

CVT: More Responsive and Quieter
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the 1.5-liter turbo features a quieter belt design and a thicker case that reduces vibrations. The CVT also provides significant drivability and performance improvements thanks to optimization of Torque On Demand control, early downshift during braking, and improved refinements to the Honda G Design shift. At full throttle, CR-V features Step Shift programming that simulates gear changes.

Enhanced Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™
Available on all grades, and standard on Sport Touring, is an updated version of Honda's Real Time All-Wheel Drive (AWD) with Intelligent Control System™. For the sixth-generation CR-V, the Real Time AWD system is quieter and can now send up to 50% of engine torque to the rear wheels, improving handling performance as well as traction management in slippery conditions.

Real Time AWD combines the conventional front-wheel-drive system with a compact transfer case that distributes torque via driveshaft to the rear drive assembly. The multi-plate clutch connects the driveshaft to the rear differential which is managed by an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump.

The Intelligent Control System activates the electric motor to actively apportion power based on road conditions, preemptively minimizing wheel spin before it happens by sending power to the rear wheels. The electric motor activating the hydraulic pump idles when not required, reducing drag within the system.

When starting on snow, for example, the system quickly sends power to the rear wheels, minimizing the potential for front wheel spin. The system also detects hill climb conditions, sending more torque to the rear wheels in cooperation with the Hill Start Assist feature. Hill Start Assist maintains brake pressure briefly after the brake pedal is released when stopped, giving the driver time to accelerate and smoothly resume motion.

Driveline noise is reduced by a new torsional damper on turbocharged models and a new constant velocity joint that connects the driveshaft to the rear differential on all models.

New Drive Modes
For the first time, CR-V features multiple selectable drive modes. This allows the driver to customize the response and fuel efficiency for preference and driving conditions. CR-V features three driving modes: Normal, Econ which reduces throttle and transmission sensitivity as well as air conditioning output to help preserve fuel efficiency, and Snow which alters the drive ratios (only for turbocharged models) and throttle mapping to maximize available traction and performance in slick, snowy conditions. CR-V Hybrid adds a Sport mode that enhances throttle response and engine sound.

  • Normal Mode
A high balance between fuel efficiency and fun driving performance.
  • ECON Mode
Designed for fuel efficient driving. Changes the pedal input/throttle opening ratio to prioritize fuel efficiency, even if the driver operates the acceleration pedal relatively aggressively. Air conditioning is set to a more efficient cycle.
  • Snow mode
Enhances traction in slippery conditions. Softens throttle response. Adjusts the transmission and Real Time 4WD to suit low-traction environments. Idle stop is disabled and engine braking is increased (EX and EX-L grades).
  • Sport Mode
Hybrid only. Improves throttle response to enhance the sporty feeling of acceleration. In addition, Active Sound Control produces a sporty sound.

New Hill Descent Control
Increasing CR-V's capability is Hill Descent Control for more control on steep or slippery declines of 7% or more. A unique feature in this class, Hill Descent Control, allows the driver, with the press of a button on the center console, to select a speed between 2 and 12 mph using the brake or gas pedal. Once the pedal is released, CR-V will maintain the set speed, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering for as long as Hill Descent Control is active. The driver adjusts speed using either the brake or gas pedal. Hill Descent Control will remain active until the system is shut off or the speed exceeds 12 mph.

  • 0.4-inch wider front and rear tracks
  • 15 percent stiffer body construction for improved driving dynamics
  • Front suspension mounted on new, lightweight rigid subframe
  • Stiffer mount points for rear multilink suspension and subframe
  • Improved steering feel and braking performance

New Enhanced Global Architecture
Honda architecture is a three-part modular system that takes advantage of component commonization to make the best product. This new approach to Honda architecture was used to create the 11th generation Civic and the new sixth-generation CR-V.

Based on an enhanced version of Honda Architecture, the new CR-V features improvements in ride, handling and overall refinement. This chassis includes MacPherson struts in front and a multilink suspension in the rear.

For improved stability and a smoother ride, CR-V's wheelbase has been extended to 106.3 inches (+1.6 inches), and its front and rear tracks are significantly wider (+0.4 inches in the front and the rear), creating an athletic stance and enhancing stability.

More Rigid Body Structure
Significant improvements to CR-V's structural stiffness, including a redesigned front subframe, benefit its ride quality, handling and collision safety protection. Stiffening members have been added to the rear door frame and B pillars, and more rigid mounting points are used for the rear springs and suspension arm mounting points. Overall, the new body is 15 percent stiffer.

For the first time, to achieve a radical reduction in cabin noise, vibration and harshness, and accurate steering response, CR-V also benefits from structural adhesive. Applied generously on the roof, A-pillars, B-pillars, floor pan, firewall, and rear structure, adhesives are applied where spot welds are performed, combining the strength of the weld and the broader surface area of the adhesive. This increases the stiffness of the joint, minimizing the need for increased sheet metal thickness or the addition of welded-on reinforcements.

Retuned Suspension
The front MacPherson strut suspension has been re-tuned for a more comfortable ride over rough surfaces, while heat treated lower ball joints reduce friction to create a more refined driving experience. A new lightweight, highly rigid cast aluminum subframe shaves 11 pounds.

In the rear, the subframe for the multilink suspension has been stiffened with stronger mount points, and the rear spring rates of the mount support have been increased 15 percent for sportier handling and improved stability.

Responsive Steering
CR-V uses a dual-pinion electronic power steering (EPS) system which features a honed steering column bearing to reduce steering friction and improve steering feel. In addition, the EPS has been tuned to provide excellent feedback and improved straight-line stability. A new electric motor control unit also enables more accurate and linear steering, while the variable gear ratio improves low speed turning and high-speed stability feel by changing gear ratios at low and high speeds.
The stiffer new aluminum subframe also positions the variable-ratio steering rack below the rear propeller shaft instead of above it as before. Moving the rack 32 mm lower, along with a low-friction column bearing and rack, significantly improves CR-V's steering system rigidity and consequently, steering feel and accuracy.

Improved Brake System
CR-V's brake controllability is improved by optimizing software for deceleration relative to tread force and pedal stroke.

All CR-Vs are equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The system provides a comfortable and refined feel at low speeds, predictable and easy operation on the highway, a sporty, fun-to-drive feel on winding roads, and reassuring high-performance stopping in emergency situations.

Large ventilated front brake rotors and rear solid rotors are standard. CR-V also uses a low-friction front caliper with a roll back spring to further reduce brake drag, contributing to fuel efficiency while still maintaining the excellent braking performance.

Improved Honda Sensing
A new Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assistive systems integrates new front sensor camera and millimeter-wave radar. The new camera features a 90-degree field of view, up from 50 degrees on the previous generation. The radar is now mounted directly behind the Honda logo on the grille, which helps to increase its field of view to 120-degrees from the 50 degrees on the previous generation.

These wide angles improve collision prevention performance to recognize attributes of objects such as a vehicle or pedestrian, as well as white lines, road boundaries such as curbs, bicyclists, motorcycles and road signs. The wide angle also enables expanded control range for CR-V at intersections.

The camera detects feature points of a target and also recognizes attributes of objects such as vehicles or pedestrians. With the use of an exceptionally fast processor, the system measures distance and the lateral position of objects based on the change in the size of the target object, how long it took for the change to occur and speed of the vehicle. This enables the camera to recognize the various objects described above.

Honda Sensing functions include:

  • New: Traffic Jam Assist (TJA): works in conjunction with ACC and LKAS to provide lane-keeping functions at speeds below approximately 45 mph all the way to a standstill, such as in congested traffic.
  • New: Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR): new camera automatically can recognize traffic speed limit signs, displaying the information on the digital meter immediately after the sign is passed.
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™): New camera system and more advanced software enables the use of CMBS™ in more situations, including the detection of pedestrians and bicyclists. If no corrective action is taken when FCW signals an alert, CMBS™ can apply different levels of automatic emergency braking action to help reduce vehicle speed and eventual collision forces, and therefore to help reduce the severity of a collision.
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW, integrated with CMBS™): When the system determines a collision is possible with a detected vehicle, visual and audible alerts from the FCW system prompt the driver to take corrective actions.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow (ACC): New camera system improves Adaptive Cruise Control with more natural brake feel and quicker reactions to changes in traffic. It also responds more quickly when changing into an open lane from behind a slower car and better maintains a constant vehicle speed in downhill situations.
  • Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS): LKAS reduces the need for steering correction movements and driving effort. For the 2023 CR-V, LKAS has been improved with more linear and natural feeling steering assist, better line tracing, and improved resistance to crosswinds.
  • Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM): Can identify solid or dashed painted lane lines, Botts' dots and cat's-eye markers to find the edge of the road and uses steering force to keep the vehicle from departing the lane or roadway altogether. The detection range is expanded up to road shoulders and curbs because of the wide-angle detection sensor.
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW): Integrated with RDM, LDW operates at speeds from approximately 45 to 90 mph and is designed to alert the driver if the vehicle is leaving a detected lane without the turn signal being activated.
  • Blind Spot Information (BSI) system: Using millimeter-wave radar installed on the rear corners of the vehicle, it can detect vehicles approaching from the rear, signaling the driver with a visual and audible warning. And the warning distance has been increased to further improve the detection performance of overtaking vehicles.
  • Low Speed Braking Control: EX-L and Sport Touring grades feature four sonar sensors on the front of the vehicle, and four on the back, that significantly improve the detection of non-metallic objects such as glass and external exterior walls that could be missed by radar. This enables the implementation of the assistive braking and the assistive driving power, to reduce the likelihood of low-speed collisions, such as in parking situations.

Additional Safety and Driver Assistive Technologies
The 6th-generation CR-V also features additional safety and driver assistive technologies.

CR-V features a Driver Attention Monitor, which continually monitors and assesses driver behavior behind the wheel to help determine if the driver is becoming inattentive. If it detects fatigue, the driver is alerted by a coffee cup icon and a 4-level bar graph on the dash. As the driver's attention drops, fewer and fewer bars are illuminated, and when it drops to two, the system displays a message inviting the driver to take a break. If the driver continues driving and the graph drops to the lowest level of one bar, a beeper sounds and the steering wheel vibrates, prompting the driver to pay closer attention or take a rest break.

A new Rear Seat Reminder also is standard. A reminder appears on the driver information interface and an alert will sound when the car is turned off and notifies drivers to check the rear seating area for children, pets or other precious cargo when exiting the car.

ACE™ Body Structure and Collision Protection
Designed to meet present and anticipated future frontal collision standards while minimizing additional weight, CR-V features the newest version of Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. ACE was introduced nearly two decades ago and has been continuously advanced, designed to help protect vehicle occupants and improve frontal crash compatibility between vehicles of varying sizes, such as an SUV and a small car. For the sixth-generation CR-V, the ACE architecture is updated to target TSP+ and 5-star crash test ratings and exceed upcoming safety standards.

This latest version of the ACE structure in the new CR-V features a new structure that incorporates many of the new features introduced on the 11th-generation Civic and 2023 HR-V. This includes a robust upper member constructed of high-strength steel, and an A-pillar structure, side frame and lower firewall structure all designed to route crash energy around the cabin, especially in oblique impacts.

Additionally, side impact protection has been enhanced to meet new, tougher side-impact standards. A new, stiffer B-pillar and side sills are used, along with stronger door stiffening beams and a stronger rear wheel arch. The body also is designed to route energy into the floor in the case of a rear collision.

Advanced Airbag and Seatbelt Technologies
CR-V uses the next-gen Honda front driver and passenger airbags first introduced in the 11th-generation Civic. These new airbags are specifically designed to reduce head rotation in a collision, especially an oblique collision. On the driver's side, the airbag uses a tuck sewing shape for increased rigidity of both sides of the airbag to cradle and hold the head, mitigating rotation and reducing the likelihood of brain injury.

On the passenger side, a three-chamber airbag design achieves a similar result. The three chambers inflate separately, with the two outer chambers that extend above the main chamber designed to cradle the head and help control rotation.

CR-V further benefits from additional standard airbag technology, with a total of 10 airbags. Driver and front passenger knee airbags and rear side impact airbags are used in CR-V for the first time, along with side curtain airbags and side impact airbags for both driver and front passenger.

Seatbelt technology has been updated as well, with an outer lap belt pretensioner used on front seatbelts, with a load limiter used on the driver's side to help prevent chest injuries. In the rear, pretensioners are used in both outboard positions, along with load limiters, and CR-V now features a rear seatbelt reminder, which informs the driver if a rear seat occupant is detected as not properly buckled up.

2023 Honda CR-V | Manufacturing

With U.S. retail sales of nearly 6 million units, the Honda CR-V is America's best-selling SUV since its U.S. launch in 1997. The new sixth-generation CR-V is built in three plants in North America using domestic and globally-sourced parts – located in and East Liberty, Ohio; Greensburg, Indiana; and Alliston, Ontario, Canada – continuing the 40-year legacy of Honda's commitment to build products close to the customer. Since 2006, Honda has produced more than 5 million CR-Vs in North America, with roughly half of those built in the U.S.
