In a significant strategic shift, Ford Motor Company has announced a reduction in the production of its popular electric truck, the F-150 Lightning. Starting April 1, 2024, production will be scaled back from two shifts per day to just one. Increased Demand for Ranger and Bronco

The change is partly due to skyrocketing demand for two other Ford models: the Ranger and the Bronco. To meet this surge, Ford is introducing a third production shift for these models, creating 1,400 new positions. This necessitates a reallocation of resources, with 600 to 700 employees from the Lightning production line being moved to support the Ranger and Bronco. This realignment allows Ford to optimize its workforce, leveraging experienced staff to maintain production efficiency while accommodating market demand.

Despite a 55% year-over-year increase in Lightning sales from 2022 to 2023, the numbers fell short of Ford's expectations. The anticipated sales of 3,200 F-150 EVs per week averaged around 1,500 units instead. It also reflects broader consumer trends in North America, where there's a stronger inclination towards petrol and diesel-powered SUVs and trucks.
