Guard Your Autonomy — Mike Durland
Mike Durland
Edition 01  /  2026
A Practical Treatise Six Chapters Twenty Thousand Words

Guard your Autonomy.

Why your attention is under siege, and why it will matter more tomorrow than it does today.

Scroll
A report from inside the attention economy.
Individual autonomy over attention is the foundational human capacity, and it is being systematically eroded by commercial systems designed to convert attention into revenue.
Central Argument  /  Guard Your Autonomy

Durland operates a YouTube channel whose economics he treats as a primary object of analysis. He has spent more than a decade producing content for a platform whose recommendation systems have undergone continuous refinement. The book is, in effect, a report written by someone whose living depends on understanding it.

Six chapters, each carrying a distinct function.

The book maintains a consistent voice and a consistent argumentative discipline. It does not hedge unnecessarily. It does not overclaim. It concedes the obvious counterarguments before they can be weaponized against the rest.

  1. I
The Inherited Stance Position & Purpose
A period in the early 1990s lived without television or telephone, which produced an instinct for refusing unsolicited demands on attention. Not wisdom. Scarcity turned into articulation.
  2. II
    The Mechanism Commercial Attention Capture
Platforms earn revenue from watch time regardless of whether viewers derive value. Negativity outperforms positive content. A feedback loop rewards the most inflammatory work. The stakes are higher than most users perceive.
  3. III
The Narrow Path Reacting versus Responding
Chosen attention versus captured attention. Involuntary pre-conscious reaction versus deliberate post-reflective response. Confirmation bias, anchoring, Dunning-Kruger, and false consensus as the rails that keep people moving while feeling free.
  4. IV
Push, Create, Strive The Positive Project
Defense alone is insufficient. Ambition is not a personal trait but a developmental capacity, systematically suppressed in most children during schooling, leaving adults with atrophied drive that must be rebuilt through deliberate practice.
  5. V
The Steel-Man What the Argument Is Not
Serendipity is real. Rest has value. Not everyone has equal access to attention management. The narrow path is redefined as any consciously chosen attention, including chosen rest. The broad path is drift.
  6. VI
    The Closing Window Near-Future Trajectory
Generative AI will produce personalized content at scale, with real-time adjustment to individual psychological profiles. The capture mechanism will become substantially more effective. The window in which ordinary people can build effective defenses is closing.

Two paths. One is yours.

Narrow
Chosen.

Attention that is consciously directed toward something the individual has evaluated and endorsed, including chosen rest, chosen wandering, and chosen play. The space between stimulus and output.

  • Deliberate engagement
  • Post-reflective response
  • Self-authored direction
  • Capacity built through push
  • Work that would not otherwise exist
Broad
Captured.

The state of being directed by systems one has not consciously evaluated. The subjective experience is of leisure. The mechanical reality is extraction. The absence of actively pursued purpose defaults here.

  • Pre-conscious reaction
  • Algorithmic curation
  • Variable-ratio reinforcement
  • Mood-congruent cognition
  • Time dissolution

The push-create-strive engine.

Having described how attention is captured, the book's fourth chapter argues that defense alone is insufficient. The remedy is structural: build capacity, use capacity to make, let the making pull you forward.

01
Stage One
Push
Move through inertia. Build capacity where there was none. The early stages are unpleasant and feel inauthentic. This is correct. Practice alternative cognitive and behavioral responses until the alternatives become automatic.
02
Stage Two
Create
Use accumulated capacity to produce work that would not exist otherwise. Absorbed engagement with challenge at the edge of competence. Transition rituals protect the block. Attention residue is real.
03
Stage Three
Strive
Creative work pulls the individual toward a self-chosen direction. Externally imposed goals have been integrated into the self. Autonomous goal pursuit. A life lived as one's own, not as drift shaped by systems it never examined.

The attention economy is optimized to hold users during the session, not to produce lasting satisfaction.

Chapter Two  /  Engineered Extraction

A practitioner, not an academic.

MKS · NC 1990 —

Mike Durland

Mike Durland operates MikesCarInfo.com, an automotive review channel on YouTube with an associated site. His primary income is platform ad revenue. His primary object of analysis is the platform itself.

The inside-out perspective gives the work both its distinctive strength and its principal limitation. The strength is that Durland describes mechanisms he has watched operate in real time, on his own work and on competitors' work, across a period in which recommendation systems have undergone continuous refinement.

When he writes that engagement-optimized systems reward hate-bait over honest work, he is not abstracting. He is describing patterns visible in his own analytics. The argument draws authority from practitioner knowledge of a kind that academic researchers rarely access and that journalists typically encounter only through interviews.

The Closing Window

The capture gets sharper from here.

Generative models can now produce text, images, audio, and video at a volume human producers cannot match. Behavioral histories already exist. Real-time optimization exists in prototype. The integration is coming.

The defensive heuristics that work against current-generation capture, such as noticing when a recommendation fails to match your actual interests, become less reliable when the recommendations are produced by systems that have a deeper model of your interests than you consciously possess.

The work of guarding attention is a practice maintained across a lifetime, not a problem solved once. The book is short. The charge is not.
