Powertrain & Range
Every 2026 Solterra runs a dual-motor all-electric drivetrain — front and rear AC synchronous permanent-magnet motors with integrated transaxles and power inverters. Two output levels are available depending on trim.
Solterra (Premium / Limited)
- Dual 87 kW motors (front + rear)
- 233 total horsepower
- 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery (104 cells)
- Rated voltage: 391V / Capacity: 191 Ah
- EPA range: 288 miles (Premium), 278 miles (Limited)
- EPA MPGe: 131/109/120 (Premium), 128/105/117 (Limited)
Solterra XT (Limited XT / Touring XT)
- Uprated motors: 167 kW front + 87 kW rear
- 338 total horsepower
- Same 74.7 kWh battery pack
- 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds
- EPA range: 278 miles (Limited XT & Touring XT)
- EPA MPGe: 128/105/117
| Motor Type | AC synchronous permanent-magnet (front + rear) |
| Transmission | Single-ratio reduction transaxles, 13.8:1 ratio |
| Battery | Lithium-ion, 74.7 kWh, 104 cells, 391V, 191 Ah |
| Battery Thermal Mgmt | Liquid cooling/heating with preconditioning system |
| Drive Modes | Eco, Normal, Power |
| Regen Braking | 5 driver-selectable levels via paddle switches |
The Premium gets 288 miles vs. 278 for all other trims. The difference comes down to the lighter 18-inch wheels with aero covers vs. the heavier 20-inch wheels on Limited and above. If maximum range is your top priority, the Premium on 18s is your best bet.
Charging
The 2026 Solterra features a NACS (North American Charging Standard) port on the right front fender, giving it native access to Tesla Supercharger stations along with all other NACS-compatible networks — over 15,000 stations across the U.S.
| Charge Port | NACS, right front fender |
| DC Fast Charging | Up to 150 kW; 10-80% in ~30 minutes |
| Onboard Charger | 11 kW (upgraded from previous model) |
| Battery Preconditioning | Automatic — optimizes battery temp for fast charging, especially in cold weather |
| Charge Port Lock | Automatic locking when plugged in |
| Charge Door | Power-operated |
The switch to a NACS port is a significant improvement. You no longer need an adapter for Tesla Superchargers — you just plug in directly. Combined with the battery preconditioning system that warms the pack before you arrive at a fast charger, the real-world fast charging experience should be noticeably better than the outgoing model.
AWD & Off-Road Capability
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard on every Solterra — there is no single-motor, front-drive option. The independent front and rear motors are managed by an improved drive controller that predicts load on each axle and distributes power accordingly, reducing body roll and improving traction in all conditions.
X-MODE Dual Mode System
- Snow / Dirt mode for light off-road and slippery surfaces
- Deep Snow / Mud mode for more challenging terrain
- Grip Control — low-speed traction management
- Downhill Assist Control
Chassis & Handling
- 8.3 inches ground clearance — best-in-class for small electric SUVs
- Active Cornering Assist
- Hill-Start Assist Control
- Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
- 4-wheel independent suspension
- Quick-ratio electric power steering (14.2:1)
| Front Suspension | MacPherson-type struts, internal rebound springs, lower L-arms, coil springs, stabilizer bar |
| Rear Suspension | Double wishbone, coil springs, dampers with internal rebound springs, stabilizer bar |
| Front Brakes | 12.9 in. ventilated discs, dual-piston calipers |
| Rear Brakes | 12.5 in. ventilated discs, single-piston calipers |
| Brake System | Electronic power-assisted, 4-channel/4-sensor ABS, Brake Assist, Brake Override |
| Steering | Electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion, 2.8 turns lock-to-lock, 36.7 ft turning circle |

Competitive Comparison
The Solterra competes in the compact electric SUV segment. Here's how it stacks up against key rivals on the metrics that matter most.
| Vehicle | Starting MSRP | HP | Range (mi) | AWD | Ground Clearance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Subaru Solterra | $38,495 | 233 / 338 | Up to 288 | Standard | 8.3 in. |
| 2026 Toyota bZ4X | ~$38,000 | 201 / 214 | Up to 286 | Available | 8.3 in. |
| 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV | ~$35,000 | 213 / 288 | Up to 319 | Available | 7.8 in. |
| 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | ~$44,000 | 168–320 | Up to 303 | Available | 6.1 in. |
| 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E | ~$37,000 | 266–480 | Up to 320 | Available | 5.7 in. |
| 2025 Kia EV6 | ~$43,000 | 167–576 | Up to 310 | Available | 5.8 in. |
No competitor offers standard AWD combined with 8.3 inches of ground clearance. If you need genuine off-road and foul-weather capability in an electric SUV, the Solterra and its Toyota bZ4X sibling are in a class of their own. The XT's 338 hp at $42,895 also makes it one of the most affordable high-performance electric SUVs on sale.
Who Should Buy This?
The Solterra Is Great For
- Subaru loyalists ready to go electric without giving up AWD and ground clearance
- Buyers in snowy, rural, or unpaved-road areas who need a capable EV
- Shoppers who want standard AWD without paying extra
- Those who value Subaru's safety reputation and EyeSight suite
- Buyers who want NACS-native charging without adapters
- Performance shoppers — the XT at $42,895 is a strong value play
Consider Alternatives If
- Maximum range is your top priority — Equinox EV and Mach-E stretch further
- You want a larger vehicle — the Solterra is compact (184.6 in. long)
- Rear legroom is critical — 35.3 in. is adequate but not class-leading
- You want to avoid subscription-dependent features
- Ultra-fast charging speed (800V architecture) matters — Ioniq 5 and EV6 are faster
The 2026 Solterra is the EV that the original should have been. Subaru addressed nearly every weakness — more power, more range, a better screen, NACS charging, and a proper performance tier with the XT — while holding the line on price. If you want a rugged, all-weather electric SUV that can handle dirt roads and snowstorms as confidently as highway miles, this is one of the strongest options in the segment. The Limited XT at $42,895 is the model to beat.
