Auburn Hills, Mich. August 17, 2020 - The all-new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is the apex predator of the truck world and cements Ram Truck as North America’s off-road truck leader. Ram TRX expands the light-duty lineup and sets new benchmarks for power and performance among half-ton pickup trucks with the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI® V-8 engine.

“The all-new 2021 Ram TRX sets the benchmark for extreme performance pickup trucks and solidifies Ram Truck’s position as the off-road truck leader,” said Mike Koval, Head of Ram Brand, FCA - North America. “Ram has a strong history of high-performance trucks and TRX adds to that while expanding the light-duty lineup with the segment’s best combination of performance, capability, luxury and technology.”

Rated at 702 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque, the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine powers the Ram TRX to a top speed of 118 mph. Combined with a high-torque-capacity TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, the Ram TRX delivers a new level of performance: 0-60 miles per hour (mph) in 4.5 seconds and the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds at 108 mph.

A proven and reliable high-performance engine, the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine delivers top output for extended driving sessions without degradation in performance.

The 2021 Ram TRX benefits from up to 32 inches of water fording, up to 8,100 pounds towing and a maximum payload capacity of 1,310 pounds.

New aesthetic design pairs chiseled form with extreme function
The all-new 2021 Ram TRX features an aggressive stance and an impossibly wide, muscular body wrapped over the top of it. Like a mixed martial arts fighter in a tailored tuxedo, the Ram TRX makes an impactful visual statement with an acute “hourglass” body design that features composite flares and fender wells that have been stretched to cover aggressive 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory 325/65/R18 All-Terrain tires.

Ram TRX is 8 inches wider when compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup, and the composite flares help to compensate for a 6-inch increase in track width. Normally, Ram 1500 features a wheel that is 8 inches wide, but the TRX design team had to accommodate a wheel that is 9 inches wide.

The front axle was shifted 20 millimeters forward to accommodate the 35-inch Goodyear Territory All-Terrain tires that were designed exclusively for TRX. The 35-inch tires are available with 18-inch beadlock-ready wheels with accent color-matched rings.

LED clearance marker lights flank the front bumper, creating a menacing light signature that further sets TRX apart from anything on the road – day or night. A new, aluminum hood features bright LED clearance lights that are integrated in the hood scoop.

The hood scoop is responsible for 50 percent of air entering the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine while the other 50 percent enters through the grille. Design elements, like the functional hood scoop, are complemented by secondary details, such as the functional air curtain just outboard of the headlamps, relieving high pressure zones at the front corners and allowing air to pass through the fenders.

A unique R-A-M badge, front grille, hood, skid plates and steel bumpers help the TRX meet extreme functional objectives. The R-A-M badge is bigger when compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup and features a new “flow-through” design that assists with airflow. All-black premium LED headlamps, including twin bi-functional projector headlamps, are standard.

TRX buyers can choose an optional full-length rock rail for added body/sill protection or traditional off-road powder-coated aluminum running boards. Optional body-side and hood graphics are available as a pair or separately.

Ram TRX features new box outers made of steel and are wider than that of a traditional Ram 1500. A bed-mounted spare tire carrier is available in addition to the standard full-size spare tire that sits underneath the bed, between the rear axle and trailer hitch. Premium LED taillamps are standard on TRX and the bezels allow for the Blind-spot Monitoring function to see around the extended box outers.

Closing out the rear of the truck, a large R-A-M badge, similar to that seen on Rebel, stretches across the tailgate. Center identification marker lights, like what is seen on Ram Heavy Duty models, are tucked between the tailgate and rear bumper.

The new aesthetic is taken to even higher levels of visual impact with oversized tow hooks, found at the front and rear of the truck, and integrated 5-inch dual exhaust ports driving the functional performance objective home.

High-performance-inspired interior with authentic premium materials
The 2021 Ram TRX combines all-new features, technology and authentic premium materials with extreme performance, class-leading quality, comfort and durability. The interior design team chose premium textures, colors and material, including available hand-wrapped leather instrument panels for unexpected luxury throughout.

The all-new 2021 Ram TRX features three interior options, including premium cloth and vinyl, premium wrapped leather and suede, or premium wrapped leather and suede with available red and carbon fiber accents. Based on the Rebel layout, trucks outfitted with a TR Equipment Group will greet occupants with premium cloth and vinyl accents featuring black and Dark Ruby Red surfaces. Opting for the TR1 or TR2 Equipment Group provides an interior based on the Ram 1500 Limited and features an all-black color scheme with leather and suede to give TRX a unique feel. Heated and ventilated premium Natura Plus leather with perforated suede accents cover the front bucket and rear bench seats. The TR1 and TR2 Equipment Groups come standard with medium Greystone stitching and Graphite Metallic accents. The TR2 Equipment Group offers TRX red stitching and carbon fiber accents as an available option.

Ram TRX features new front seats with enhanced upper bolster support and embroidered logos. TR1 and TR2 Equipment Groups feature a Modular Lightweight Load-bearing Equipment / Pouch Attachment Ladder System (MOLLE/PALS) on the seatback that enables bags and other equipment to be weaved in place.

A new SRT-signature flat-bottom steering wheel, with enhanced hand grips wrapped in leather with optional suede and carbon fiber accents, enables performance driving. New aluminum paddle shifters stretch above and below the steering wheel spokes, allowing the driver to choose the proper gear with their fingertips.

A console mounted performance floor shifter, which includes a cast metal main grip wrapped with semi-perforated leather, lends itself to spirited performance driving that TRX was bred for, while maximizing storage. Both the console and paddle shifters mark the debut of each in a Ram truck.

The Drive Mode selector has been integrated into the dashboard above the transfer case switches and offers different modes of operation, indicated by a TRX pictogram for select environments: Normal, Wet/Snow, Off-road and Baja. A Launch Control button is easily within reach of the driver, sitting to the right of the transfer case switches, and is standard on TRX.

Reinforcing TRX’s performance chops, an all-new Head-up Display unit can show up to five different content areas at once, including Lane Departure, Lane Keep Assist, adaptive cruise control, turn-by-turn navigation, current speed, current gear and speed limit. The Head-up Display is available on the TR2 Equipment Group and is a full-color unit accessible through the 12-inch Uconnect 4C touchscreen.

A custom specifications plate on the console lid lists which engine is under the hood, the type of supercharger Ram TRX uses, boost output, horsepower and the vehicle-specific Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

A new, innovative dual-path induction system enables extreme performance
The new 2021 Ram TRX is designed for class-leading, uncompromising performance in the harshest environments. Stratospheric power and performance numbers were achieved in part through a new, innovative dual-path air induction system that ensures the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine receives a steady supply of clean, cool air regardless of inbound dirt and debris.

The Ram TRX uses two paths to draw in outside air and routes it to a large, 29-liter air box that filters out dirt, sand, debris and water before getting anywhere near the engine. The innovative dual-path system pulls in outside air from a functional scoop in the hood and the upper edge of the grille. Air entering the grille flows to the bottom front of the air box, guided by tailored panels. The hood scoop ducts air to the bottom rear of the air box via ports that seal to the hood when it is closed. An air box support bar is precision-mounted in the engine compartment during vehicle assembly to ensure the hood intake seals to the air box ducts to prevent engine-heated air from entering the system.

Directing incoming air to the bottom of the air box helps dirt and water settle out before the air reaches the filter elements, ensuring that the Ram TRX continues to perform in the most grueling environments. A one-way drain in the bottom of the air box evacuates water even when the vehicle is moving. Intake air is drawn upward from the box through twin, heavy-duty air filters that provide 198.4 square inches of filter surface area, four times the dust trapping capacity when compared to the closest competitor, to remove any residual dust or sand before the air is ducted. Unfolded, the filter surface medium covers 13.3 square feet.

The entire Ram TRX intake system is engineered to minimize power-robbing air restrictions while ensuring only clean, cool air reaches the engine. Industry-standard testing shows that the Ram TRX far exceeds any competitor in the amount of time it can ingest dirty air and debris before performance is diminished. The Ram TRX’s air box is mounted at the top of the engine, making it easy to access should the owner choose to field-clean the high-performance filter elements.

From modern muscle cars to high-performance SUVs, the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 has earned a reputation as a potent, reliable power source that delivers head-turning power when ordered by the driver’s right foot and is also a smooth, efficient power plant at cruising speeds.

To best match gear selection and shift points to the driver’s demands, the robust TorqueFlite 8HP95 eight-speed automatic transmission monitors inputs, such as engine torque gradients, throttle kick-down, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, detection of friction, downshifts and road grade. This versatile, well-developed, high-torque-capacity, eight-speed transmission delivers quick acceleration and precise, crisp, quick gear changes, enhancing ride quality to luxury car levels with consistent performance and drivability.

Launch Control is standard with the 2021 Ram TRX and manages tire slip while launching the vehicle to give the driver consistent straight-line acceleration. Wheel speed sensors watch for driveline-damaging wheel hop at launch and, in milliseconds, provide inputs to the powertrain control module to modify the engine torque to regain full grip.

The Ram TRX is also equipped with Jump Detection, which uses wheel-speed and ride-height sensors and accelerometers at each corner to identify when the vehicle is airborne and acts to prevent driveline-damaging power spikes. Acting in milliseconds, Jump Detection modifies engine speed and torque, gear selection, transfer case torque split, damping rates and other powertrain and suspension components through the landing to deliver optimum performance.

Dynamic drive modes
The 2021 Ram TRX uses performance-tuned software to pre-configure and distinguish five dynamic modes – Auto, Sport, Tow, Snow and Custom – enabling drivers to choose a vehicle setting that ideally meets their requirements and ambient conditions. The drive modes separately control the four-wheel-drive system, throttle response, transmission, paddle shifters, suspension and the electric power steering. All modes use active slip control that prevents binding and excessive slip from front to rear.

Custom mode allows the driver to personalize the vehicle’s performance with a selectable driving experience, offering a multitude of vehicle system combinations.

Separately, the Ram TRX features three dynamic off-road modes – Mud/Sand, Rock and Baja – enabling drivers to choose a setting that best fits the terrain around them. Like the on-road modes, the off-road drive modes control several systems, including the four-wheel-drive system, throttle response, transmission, paddle shifters, suspension and steering.

Engineered to handle the most punishing conditions with extreme capability
Designed bolt by bolt to significantly outperform every other truck, the 2021 Ram TRX has been rigorously tested to handle the most punishing conditions with extreme capability and durability.

The 2021 Ram TRX’s frame is composed of thicker, optimally shaped, strategically placed high-strength steel that uses low-torsion attributes to increase durability and stability. Sections of the frame are hydroformed for dimensional accuracy, reducing the need for welding, and the side rails are fully boxed. The front rails use high-strength steel and hydroformed sections to set a strong foundation to better handle the front suspension load. Galvanized frame components provide improved corrosion protection.

The Ram TRX boasts a ground clearance of 11.8 inches due in part to a 2-inch ride height increase when compared with the rest of the 1500 lineup, along with 35-inch tires. This combination enables TRX to clear surface obstacles easily and at high speeds.

To protect critical components, including the front axle, transfer case, transmission pan and fuel tank, TRX employs five skid plates. A separate skid plate sits at the bottom of the front fascia, mitigating potential damage, and doubles as a belly pan. Heavy-duty gauge steel rock sliders are an available option.

The use of lightweight, high-strength aluminum closures, including the hood and tailgate, help reduce weight and boost fuel economy. Ram TRX also uses aluminum engine mounts, front axle center section, front suspension and transmission cross-members, front upper and lower control arms, front skid plate, transmission skid plate and steering system gear.

An all-new independent front suspension system with active damping uses high-strength aluminum to maintain overall strength and durability. The all-new independent front suspension system includes new front upper and lower control arms made of forged aluminum with special attention paid to the caster and camber angles during suspension cycling. The new, longer, substantially sized front upper and lower control arms are constructed of 80-ksi high-strength steel and designed with a focus on additional wheel travel and axle track width. This new suspension system features upgraded components to provide more performance and improved endurance.

Out back, the Ram TRX’s rear suspension had to clear packaging barriers and the engineering team took that into consideration with this unique application. The result is an innovative and durable solution that produces greater wheel travel without reducing cargo area in the bed.

The 2021 Ram TRX uses an all-new rear suspension system with active damping and an exclusive five-link coil system for incredible ride characteristics and durability. The frame’s hard points for the five-link suspension system differ when compared to a standard-issue Ram 1500 and allow the Dana 60 rear axle to travel up to 13 inches. Overall, rear-wheel travel is increased to more than 13 inches from the standard 9 inches, or more than 40 percent when compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup.

The 2021 Ram TRX uses the proven five-link coil suspension configuration and provides better articulation over obstacles than a leaf-spring system. This suspension design reduces friction in the spring system and weighs significantly less than a comparable leaf spring system. At 600 millimeters in length, the robust rear springs are the largest ever applied on a non-commercial production vehicle.

The robust coil springs are more than up to the task of handling a maximum payload of 1,310 pounds and towing capability of 8,100 pounds.

New 2.6-inch Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive performance shocks use precision-machined, single-piece construction comprised of rigid aluminum to reduce and dissipate heat and continuously adjust damping forces for optimal body control and terrain isolation. The adaptive performance shocks feature robust corrosion protection with a durable finish and directional-machined cooling fins aligned with air flow for more effective cooling.

Dual Electronic Proportional Valves continuously adjust damping forces for precise, independent control of compression and rebound damping. A nitrogen-charged remote reservoir uses a hot-formed, zero-leak tube closure to ensure maximum durability during extreme on- and off-road events.

A pressure-activated Triple Rod seal has been field-tested for long-lasting durability against contamination and leaks. Ram TRX uses stainless steel braided high-pressure hose to combat corrosion and abrasion while being able to resist up to 5,800 PSI. A high-strength, lightweight rock shield defends the piston rod against incoming rubble with a custom molded escape path for debris.

The Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive performance shocks have been tuned to demonstrate optimum balance between on-road handling and class-leading off-road capability. Ride comfort, body roll control and handling are significantly improved with the Ram-proprietary Active Terrain Dynamics suspension management system, new shock tuning, hard points and body mount strategy.

In addition to a standard urethane jounce bumper, the internals of the Bilstein adaptive performance shock feature a Jounce Cut Off to create three zones for progressive bottom-out control during extreme compression events. All modes can reach peak compression damping for the most extreme events.

The 2021 Ram TRX is a high-performance pickup truck built to handle the most punishing conditions with extreme capability and durability. To clear the elevated benchmarks and performance figures that TRX presents, a Dana 60 rear axle with full floating axle shafts is standard equipment and handles the increased torque output, rear electronic locking differential and 35-inch tires. The Dana 60 rear axle uses an axle hop damper that enables improved traction and axle control on rough surfaces. A new rear axle center section provides balanced performance and a locking differential for increased off-road performance.

The Ram TRX is equipped with a new BorgWarner 48-13 full-time active transfer case that enables passage through any off-road obstruction or weather condition. This modified transfer case features upgraded internals for improved strength and durability. Ram TRX features a low range of 2.64:1 for rock crawling and can be flat-towed while in neutral.

Off road, the 2021 Ram TRX will race to 100 mph with ease, and the segment’s largest brakes bring the TRX to a composed halt. Ram TRX relies on a four-wheel disc brake system and a hydraulic compensation unit to enhance brake pedal feel and performance during emergency maneuvers. Up front are two-piston monoblock calipers clamping down on 15-inch inverted hat (outboard venting) rotors for improved cooling. The rear uses single piston calipers with 15-inch rotors to provide incredible stopping power. An electronic parking brake holds the truck steady when applied and is standard.

For the 2021 Ram TRX, engineers found that to maximize capability, it would call for a 35-inch tire. Developed exclusively for the Ram TRX, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory All-Terrain 325/65R/18 tires, featuring an aggressive tread and sidewall with D-load rating, are assigned the task.

There are two different wheel designs that are available on TRX, including an 18-by-9-inch optional beadlock-ready wheel straight from the factory.

An approach angle of 30.2 degrees, breakover angle of 21.9 degrees, departure angle of 23.5 degrees and a ground clearance of 11.8 inches allow the Ram TRX to go anywhere.

Auburn Hills, Mich. August 17, 2020 - For the new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX, the design team integrated both rugged and refined elements with the most prominent design statements, visually telegraphing the extreme performance and functional attributes of the truck. The apex predator of the truck world, Ram TRX features an exterior design that is built around suspension and frame prerequisites that far exceed the standard Ram 1500 requirements. These functional attributes drive imposing proportions that translate into an aggressive stance that visually projects a singular focus of purpose and competitive dominance.

“The Ram TRX allowed us the opportunity to expand Ram’s portfolio with a high-speed, off-road, desert racer,” said Mark Trostle, Head of Ram Exterior Design – FCA. “TRX was designed to handle extreme performance conditions with ease, all while looking the part. We designed the muscular body to make an impactful visual statement that matches the potent drivetrain, robust suspension and truly defines what a high-performance off-road pickup truck is."

New aesthetic design pairs chiseled form with extreme function
For the new 2021 Ram TRX, the design team took a page out of the 2016 Ram 1500 Rebel TRX Concept’s playbook by starting with an aggressive stance and wrapping an impossibly wide, muscular body over the top of it. A unique R-A-M badge, front grille, hood, skid plates and steel bumpers share design cues with the Ram 1500 Rebel and Power Wagon, but feature even more extreme functional objectives. The new aesthetic is taken to even higher levels of visual impact with oversized tow hooks, found at both the front and rear of the truck, driving the functional objective home.

With the addition of the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI® V-8 engine, TRX relies on a new, aluminum hood and features bright LED clearance lights that are integrated in the hood scoop. To assist with additional airflow, the new, sculpted grille directs air to places where it’s needed to keep the juggernaut that is the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 in the center of the performance envelope. The R-A-M badge on the grille is bigger when compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup and features a new “flow-through” design that also assists with airflow. The hood scoop is responsible for 50 percent of air entering the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine while the other 50 percent enters through the grille. Design elements like the brawny, functional hood scoop are complimented by secondary details, such as the functional air curtain just outboard of the headlamps, relieving high pressure zones at the front corners, and allowing air to pass through the fenders.

When compared to the 2021 Ram 1500 Rebel, Ram TRX is 8 inches wider and composite flares help to compensate for a 6-inch increase in track width. Normally, Ram 1500 features a wheel that is 8 inches wide, but the TRX design team had to accommodate a wheel that is 9 inches wide. LED clearance marker lights flank the front bumper, creating a menacing light signature that further sets TRX apart from anything on the road – day or night. The front axle was shifted 20 millimeters forward to accommodate the 35-inch Goodyear Territory All-Terrain tires that were designed exclusively for TRX. The 35-inch tires are available with 18-inch beadlock-ready wheels with accent color-matched rings. All-black premium LED headlamps, including twin bi-functional projector headlamps, are standard along with available 360-degree camera views. A lower skid plate forged from steel redirects errant incoming debris, and LED fog lamps provide additional light when visibility conditions are reduced.

An optional full-length rock rail for added body/sill protection or a traditional off-road powder-coated aluminum running board are available. Optional body-side and hood graphics are available as a pair or separately.

The bed of TRX was partially designed with new box outers that are steel, but are wider than that of a normal 1500. Using the storage capacity of the Ram 1500, a bed-mounted spare tire carrier is available in addition to the standard full-size spare tire that sits underneath the bed, between the rear axle and trailer hitch. The under-bed slot is large enough to accommodate a 37-inch tire. Premium LED taillamps are standard on TRX, and the bezels allow for the Blind-spot Monitoring function to see around the extended box outers.

Closing out the rear of the truck, a large R-A-M badge, similar to that seen on the Rebel, stretches across the tailgate. Center identification marker lights, like what is seen on Ram 3500 Heavy Duty dual-rear-wheel models, are perched between the tailgate and rear bumper. The rear bumper features tow hooks to match the capability of the truck and integrated 5-inch dual exhaust ports.

The 2021 Ram TRX is available in seven colors: Flame Red, Hydro Blue, Granite Crystal, Billet Silver, Diamond Black Crystal, Bright White and Ignition Orange (late availability). Ram TRX models are available in a two-tone color scheme that carries through the newly designed fender flares and lower body.

High-performance-inspired interior with authentic premium materials
For 2021, all-new features, technology and premium materials help Ram TRX answer the call for extreme performance with class-leading quality, comfort and durability, solidifying Ram as North America’s off-road pickup truck leader.

An extreme-performance pickup truck calls for materials that can handle elevated g-forces while keeping occupants in place. The interior design team chose authentic premium materials, colors and textures, including hand-wrapped leather surfaces for unexpected luxury throughout.

The all-new 2021 Ram TRX features three interior options, including premium cloth and vinyl, premium wrapped leather and suede, or premium wrapped leather and suede with available red and carbon fiber accents. Based on the Rebel layout, trucks outfitted with the TR Equipment Group greet occupants with premium cloth and vinyl accents featuring black and Dark Ruby Red surfaces. Opting for the TR1 or TR2 Equipment Group provides an interior based on the Ram 1500 Limited and features an all-black color scheme with leather and suede to give TRX a unique feel. Heated and ventilated premium Natura Plus leather with perforated suede accents cover the front buckets and rear bench seats.

TR1 and TR2 Equipment Groups feature a Modular Lightweight Load-bearing Equipment / Pouch Attachment Ladder System (MOLLE/PALS) on the seatback that enables bags and other equipment to be woven in place. All TRX models feature a 60/40 split rear seat while the TR2 Equipment Group offers a standard 60/40 reclining rear seat with fold-down center armrest that mimics the materials and colors from the front center console.

A new SRT-signature flat-bottom steering wheel, with enhanced hand grips wrapped in leather with optional suede and carbon fiber accents, enables performance driving. New aluminum paddle shifters stretch above and below the steering wheel spokes, allowing drivers to choose the proper gear with their fingertips. A new console-mounted performance floor shifter, which includes a cast metal main grip wrapped with semi-perforated leather, lends itself to spirited performance driving that TRX was bred for while maximizing storage.

A launch control button is easily within reach of the driver, sitting to the right of the transfer case switch, and is standard on TRX.

Reinforcing TRX’s performance chops, an all-new Head-up Display unit can show up to five different content areas at once. The Head-up Display is available on the TR2 Equipment Group and is a full-color unit that’s accessible through the 12-inch Uconnect 4C touchscreen. Once in the options menu, you can drag and drop what is shown and where to show it. There are a few different configurations that allow the Head-up Display to show up to five different areas of interest, including Lane Departure, Lane Keep Assist, adaptive cruise control, turn-by-turn navigation, current speed, current gear and speed limit.

The instrument panel combines a strong structurally interlocking appearance covered in softer forms, pushing up and toward the cabin. Center stack details include brushed metal accents, Black Onyx bezels with a machined finish texture and available carbon fiber accents. As a centerpiece, the 2021 Ram TRX features the Uconnect 4C NAV on a 12-inch fully configurable touchscreen as standard, allowing for even more customization. The touchscreen can house one application, such as the navigation map, across the entire 12-inch screen or can be divided in half, operating two different applications at once. A multifunction switch bank, which includes auxiliary switches, sits below the touchscreen, providing physical control of specific features. Redundant HVAC controls are located on both sides of the display.

TRX uses a 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) cluster that is exclusive to the model and features a lit TRX badge, unique TRX colors and graphics with reconfigurable gauges. The same graphics appear on the 12-inch Uconnect 4C screen. This is the first time that Drive Modes and Off-road Performance Pages are displayed on the 12-inch Uconnect 4C touchscreen.

Other features found in the interior include a custom specifications plate on the console lid. This plate lists which engine is under the hood, the type of supercharger TRX uses to boost output, horsepower and the vehicle-specific Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Designers included many functional items, like full coverage all-weather floor mats aligned to each trim’s accent color. Metal pedals, bright sill inserts and wrapped A- and B-pillar grab handles complete the appearance on TR1 and TR2 Equipment Groups.

Auburn Hills, Mich. August 17, 2020 - The all-new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX expands the brand’s light-duty truck lineup and sets the benchmark for extreme performance pickups. Designed bolt by bolt to significantly outperform every other truck, the 2021 Ram TRX has been rigorously tested to handle the most punishing conditions with extreme capability and durability.

“The 2021 Ram TRX can move across miles of rough terrain at incredible speeds, effortlessly absorbing impacts, and truly defines what a high-performance off-road pickup truck is,” said Darryl Smith, Vehicle Line Executive, SRT Performance Vehicles. “Engineering a truck with such a high tolerance for punishment keeps the focus on chassis development and durability.”

An approach angle of 30.2 degrees, breakover angle of 21.9 degrees, departure angle of 23.5 degrees and a ground clearance of 11.8 inches allow the Ram TRX to go anywhere.

The 2021 Ram TRX benefits from up to 32 inches of water fording, up to 8,100 pounds towing and a maximum payload capacity of 1,310 pounds.

Frame
The 2021 Ram TRX’s frame is composed of 98 percent high-strength steel that uses low-torsion attributes to increase durability, stability and handling precision. Sections of the frame are hydroformed for dimensional accuracy, reducing the need for welding, and the side rails are fully boxed. The front rails use high-strength steel and hydroformed sections to set a strong foundation to better handle the front suspension load. Galvanized frame components are used for improved corrosion protection.

Heavy-gauge steel rock sliders are also an available option.

The use of lightweight, high-strength aluminum closures, including the hood and tailgate, helps reduce weight and boost fuel economy. Ram TRX also uses aluminum engine mounts, front axle center section, front suspension and transmission cross-members, front upper and lower control arms, front skid plate, transmission skid plate and steering system gear.

Front suspension
An all-new independent front suspension system with active damping uses high-strength aluminum to maintain overall strength and durability. The all-new independent front suspension system includes new upper and lower control arms made of forged aluminum with special attention paid to the case and camber angles during suspension cycling. This new suspension system features upgraded components to provide more performance and improved endurance. The front half shafts feature a new ball spline design to deliver smooth operation and high strength over extreme suspension travel. Overall, front-wheel travel is increased to more than 13 inches from the standard 9 inches, more than 40 percent when compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup.

New 2.6-inch Bilstein adaptive performance shocks use precision-machined, single-piece construction comprised of rigid aluminum to reduce and dissipate heat and to continuously adjust damping forces for optimal body control and terrain isolation. The performance shocks feature robust corrosion protection with a durable finish and directional-machined cooling fins aligned with air flow for more effective cooling.

The Bilstein adaptive performance shocks have been tuned to demonstrate optimum balance between on-road handling and class-leading, off-road capability. Ride comfort, body roll control and handling are significantly improved with new shock tuning, hard points and body-mount strategy.

Dual Electronic Proportional Valves continuously adjust damping forces for precise, independent control of compression and rebound damping. A nitrogen-charged remote reservoir uses a hot formed, zero leak tube closure to ensure maximum durability during extreme on- and off-road events.

A pressure-activated Triple Rod seal has been field tested for long-lasting durability against contamination and leaks. Ram TRX uses stainless steel braided high-pressure hose to combat corrosion and abrasion while being able to resist up to 5,800 PSI. A 7/8-inch case-hardened steel piston rod features best-in-class hardening depth and chrome thickness for superior reliability and durability that combines fast reaction time, unbeatable damping and improved heat dissipation for traversing harsh terrain at speeds greater than 100 mph. A high-strength rock shield defends the piston rod against incoming rubble with a custom-molded escape path for debris.

Ram TRX’s Bilstein front adaptive performance shocks employ three vibration sensors and travel sensors at all four wheels for maximum detection and control. These sensors also work to minimize the trade-off of on- versus off-road comfort. Different suspension modes allow different amounts of pitch, roll and heave control.

In addition to a standard urethane jounce bumper, the internals of the Bilstein adaptive performance shock feature a Jounce Cut Off to create three zones for progressive bottom-out control during extreme compression events. All modes are capable of reaching peak compression damping for the most extreme events.

Rear suspension
Out back, the Ram TRX’s rear suspension had to clear packaging barriers and the engineering team took that into consideration with this unique application. The result is an innovative and durable solution that produces greater wheel travel without reducing cargo area in the bed.

The 2021 Ram TRX uses an all-new rear suspension system with active damping and an exclusive five-link coil system for incredible ride characteristics and durability. The frame’s hard points for the five-link suspension system differ when compared to a standard-issue Ram 1500 and allow the Dana 60 rear axle to travel up to 13 inches. Overall, rear-wheel travel is increased to more than 13 inches from the standard 9 inches, an increase of more than 40 percent when compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup.

New 2.6-inch Bilstein performance shocks allow for increased wheel travel while reducing and dissipating heat. The new Bilstein performance shocks feature Dual Electronic Proportional Valves that continuously adjust damping forces for optimal body control and terrain isolation. Like the front shocks, the rears also use a nitrogen-charged remote reservoir, stainless steel braided high-pressure hose, and a 7/8-inch case-hardened steel piston rod for enhanced reliability and durability. All of this combined achieves a fast reaction time, unbeatable damping and improved heat dissipation for traversing harsh terrain at speeds greater than 100 mph. A high-strength extended rock shield defends the piston rod against inbound debris.

The 2021 Ram TRX uses the proven five-link coil suspension configuration and provides better articulation over obstacles than a leaf spring system. The robust coil springs are more than up to the task of handling a maximum payload of 1,310 pounds and towing capability of 8,100 pounds.

The five-link coil design incorporates support at all major points of force and functionally resists unwanted axle rotation. More robust link bushings increase durability while continuing to deliver the most comfortable ride and handling in a full-size pickup truck. The unique five-link axle control and natural rotation enable the U-joints in the driveshaft to run smoothly and with less vibration through the suspension’s range of motion. Additionally, links are engineered in-line with the frame rails, so overall packaging is better while weight is reduced.

The standard rear coils are swapped out for performance springs located in the factory-set positions. The upper links are 55-by-38 millimeters, the lower links are 84-by-38 millimeters and use high-strength steel drawn over mandrel that is 4 millimeters thick. The Panhard bar is constructed from SAE 1541 forged steel for increased strength and the four upper and lower links use a heavy-duty rubber bushing at both the frame mount and axle to improve movement while maintaining the isolation from road noise and vibration. The link placement carefully rotates the axle during full cycle without overextending the U-joints or slip joint of the driveshaft.

Rear axle
The 2021 Ram TRX is a high-performance pickup truck built to handle the most punishing conditions with extreme capability and durability. In order to clear the elevated benchmarks and performance figures that TRX presents, a Dana 60 rear axle with full-floating axle shafts is standard equipment and handles the increased torque output, rear electronic locking differential and 35-inch tires. The Dana 60 rear axle uses an axle-hop damper that enables improved traction and axle control on rough surfaces. A new rear axle center section provides balanced performance and a locking differential for increased performance off-road. New tube assemblies support the added track width, increased loading and suspension changes. New rear axle shafts support the track increase and increased loading. A new rear prop shaft features a slip-between-centers design for increased travel and strength.

Transfer case
The Ram TRX is equipped with a BorgWarner 48-13 full-time active transfer case that enables TRX to go through any off-road obstruction or weather condition. This modified transfer case features upgraded internals for improved strength and durability courtesy of extra clutch plates, a heavier-duty clutch apply bearing, six-pinion planetary low-range gear and a 20 percent wider, more robust chain. Other improvements include a new main shaft, new longer rear case half shaft to accommodate component changes and a rear output flange that replaces the slip yoke. There are six different drive modes – Auto, Sport, Snow, Tow, Mud and Baja – that employ a unique calibration. All modes use active slip control that prevents binding and excessive slip from front to rear. Ram TRX features a low range of 2.64:1 for rock crawling and has the ability to be flat-towed while in neutral. TRX’s off-road prowess is bolstered by a rear electronic locking differential.

Selec-Speed Control
Selec-Speed Control is standard with the eight-speed automatic transmission and manages vehicle speed in "4LO" while traversing off-road terrain without requiring throttle or brake input, allowing the driver to focus on steering. Selec-Speed Control is activated using a button on the dashboard and can be adjusted from 0.6-5 mph simply by using the Auto Stick shift control or paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel.

Sway bar
The front sway bar is located at the factory mounting points, but uses extended and more robust links to accommodate the longer wheel travel. Although the Ram TRX sits higher than a standard Ram 1500, engineers were careful to minimize resistance at the sway bar to keep left-to-right articulation in check and to assist in keeping the tires on the ground.

Steering
The Ram TRX features a new SRT-signature flat-bottom steering wheel with enhanced hand grips, aluminum paddle shifters and electric power steering (EPS), like the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup. The use of electric power steering takes the burden off of the engine having to constantly turn the hydraulic pump. Instead, the electric power steering uses an electric motor to power the rack-and-pinion steering system. The use of electric power steering also reduces complexity by removing a pump, high-pressure hydraulic hoses and cooling apparatus. EPS allows for TRX’s steering to be specifically calibrated to optimize input and effort regardless of vehicle speed. EPS is constantly sensing input from the driver or undulation in the road surface, then compensates for improved comfort. Ram TRX offers three different steering modes - Street, Sport and Rock - for different levels of effort, feedback and control.

Trailer Reverse Steering Control
Trailer Reverse Steering Control is an available standalone option and, when equipped, is located below the Uconnect 4C NAV 12-inch touchscreen. This new system, debuting on a Ram Truck model for the first time, allows the driver to enter a few measurements before the camera tracks the trailer position and the driver is backing up and guiding the trailer. The driver simply rotates the dial left or right in the direction they want the trailer to go while the system controls the steering wheel.

Tires and wheels
For the 2021 Ram TRX, engineers found that to maximize capability, it would call for a 35-inch tire. Developed exclusively for the Ram TRX, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory All-Terrain 325/65R/18 tires, featuring an aggressive tread and sidewall with D-load rating, are assigned the task. All TRX models feature full rear wheel liners to help with road noise and to protect from gravel and sand.

There are two different wheel designs that are available on TRX, including an 18-by-9-inch optional beadlock-ready wheel straight from the factory.

Beadlock-capable wheels are a functional upgrade for vehicles that spend the majority of their time in the rocks and sand. The beadlock design provides additional tire-holding strength by pinching the outside of the tire’s sidewall to the rim. Beadlock wheels allow for low-pressure use and improved off-road traction without having the tire separate from the wheel.

Like the desert trucks that were studied during conception, Ram TRX can hold a full-size spare tire with an optional dedicated rack in the bed of the truck. This available option includes the mount, wheel and tire. A full-size spare mounted under the bed, between the rear axle and tow hitch, comes standard.

Brakes
Off road, the 2021 Ram TRX will race to 100 mph with ease, and the segment’s largest brakes bring it to a composed halt.

Aerodynamics
Extensive wind-tunnel testing was conducted to fine-tune TRX’s exterior shape and air vent placement. Time spent in the wind tunnel paired with modern styling afforded a coefficient of drag of .489.

The body of the new 2021 Ram TRX is the product of design and engineering cooperation at its best. Delivering an extreme pickup truck required an aggressive approach from both teams to effectively route cooling through the front end. Adequate cooling is important for extreme off-road performance, towing and assuring proper airflow to the induction and supercharger.

The Ram TRX relies on a new, aluminum hood with an integrated hood scoop that is responsible for 50 percent of air entering the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine while the other 50 percent enters through the grille. The air induction system features the largest area air filter in the segment and uses two inlets to send clean, cool air into the engine. A functional air curtain just outboard of the headlamps relieves high-pressure zones at the front corners, allowing air to pass through the fenders.

The R-A-M badge on the grille is bigger when compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup and features a new “flow-through” design that also assists with airflow.

The new Ram TRX’s elevated hood better directs air away from the wiper area, improving overall aerodynamics and reducing wind noise. The bed-to-cab execution is sub-flush to reduce disturbance alongside the body. Ram TRX uses the Venturi roof design first seen on the latest Ram 1500 and directs air back to the rear spoiler.

Unsurpassed Powertrain Warranty – five years/60,000 miles
The 2021 Ram TRX is backed with a five-year/60,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty. The Powertrain Limited Warranty covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair a covered powertrain component – engine, transmission and drive system. The warranty is also transferable, allowing customers who sell their truck during the warranty period to pass the coverage onto the new owner.

The standard three-year/36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for the Ram TRX, from the body to the electrical system.

Thousands of miles of extreme testing
The new 2021 Ram TRX has undergone thousands of miles of testing. Extreme environmental testing occurred at various sites, including in the scorching Arizona heat, the blistering cold of northern Michigan and Minnesota and thousands of feet above sea level in Colorado, for weeks at a time. In addition to all laboratory and standardized tests, the new Ram TRX scaled sand dunes, crawled rocks in Moab, Utah, and traversed two-lane tracks all over the United States.

An all-new, high-speed, desert durability test track was developed for the Ram TRX to far exceed the standard half-ton pickup truck requirements. Engineers subjected development trucks to thousands of miles of desert off-road testing to ensure that TRX has the strength, durability and reliability the extreme off-road customer expects and demands.

Auburn Hills, Mich. August 17, 2020 - The new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is the apex predator of the truck world, cementing Ram Truck as North America’s off-road truck leader. Engineered to dominate the most challenging off-road and paved-road environments, the Ram TRX sets new benchmarks for power and performance among half-ton pickup trucks with the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI® V-8 engine.

“The new 2021 Ram TRX demands an engine with specific abilities and robust power delivery to perform in the most extreme environments,” said Micky Bly, Head of Global Propulsion Systems, FCA. “The proven 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine moves the Ram TRX through punishing terrain at a ferocious pace.”

Rated at 702 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque, the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine powers the Ram TRX to a top speed of 118 miles per hour (mph). Combined with a high-torque-capacity TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, the Ram TRX delivers a new level of performance: 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, 0-100 mph in 10.5 seconds and the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds at 108 mph.

A proven and reliable high-performance engine, the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine delivers top output for extended driving sessions without degradation in performance.

A new, innovative dual-path induction system engineered for extreme performance
The new 2021 Ram TRX is designed for class-leading, uncompromising performance in the harshest environments. Stratospheric power and performance numbers were achieved in part through a new, innovative dual-path air induction system that ensures the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine receives a steady supply of clean, cool air regardless of inbound dirt and debris.

Making sure the engine gets all the clean, cool air it needs to crank out 702 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque, the Ram TRX uses two paths to draw in outside air and routes it to a large, 29-liter air box that filters out dirt, sand, debris and water before they get anywhere near the engine.

Intake air is drawn upward from the box through twin, heavy-duty air filters that provide 198.4 square inches of filter surface area, four times the dust trapping capacity when compared to the closest competitor and two-and-a-half times more than the standard Ram 1500 air filter, to remove any residual dust or sand before the air is ducted to the 92-mm throttle body and into the 2.38-liter per revolution twin-screw supercharger.

The supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 is tailored to the Ram TRX with a rear-sump oil pan that contains a system of baffles to help manage oil flow and supply during extreme off-road driving maneuvers. L-shaped scrapers attached to the crankshaft help move oil, which leaves the crankshaft at up to 200 mph, from the crankcase back to the oil sump.

The 2021 Ram TRX is fitted with free-flowing cast stainless steel exhaust manifolds that feed into low-restriction five-inch Black Chrome dual exhaust tips. This new dual exhaust system with an electric-activated valve design provides an exhilarating and unmistakable sound during wide-open throttle acceleration.

With a high-mounted alternator, the new 2021 Ram TRX can traverse up to 32 inches of water.

Bold, boosted power
From modern muscle cars to high-performance SUVs, the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 has earned a reputation as a potent, reliable power source that delivers head-turning power when ordered by the driver’s right foot and is also a smooth, efficient power plant at cruising speeds.

The focus of the engine is the supercharger with close-set twin-screw rotors and a pair of charge air coolers integrated in the housing. A separate, dedicated cooling circuit for the charge air coolers includes a pump, coolant reservoir and heat exchanger. At wide open throttle, the charge air coolers reject 40 kilowatts of heat from the compressed air – equivalent to the output of 26 home space heaters.

An integrated electronic bypass valve regulates boost pressure to a maximum of 11.6 PSI (80 kPa). The supercharger uses a drive ratio of 2.36:1 and has a maximum speed of 14,600 rpm. It is sealed for life with a premium synthetic oil specifically tailored to protect the rotor timing gears and bearings.

Other key components of the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 include:
  • Cast-iron engine block with water jackets between the cylinders for optimal cooling
  • Forged-steel crankshaft with induction-hardened bearing surfaces
  • Specially tuned dual mass crankshaft damper, burst-tested to 13,000 rpm
  • High-strength, forged-alloy pistons
  • Powder-forged connecting rods with high-load-capacity bushings and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated piston pins
  • Piston-cooling oil jets
  • Heat-treated aluminum-alloy cylinder heads
  • Sodium-cooled exhaust valves, hollow-stem intake valves and steel-alloy heads that stand up to temperatures as high as 1,652 degrees Fahrenheit (900 degrees Celsius)
  • External oil cooler
Dual in-tank, high-flow, multi-mode pumps tailor fuel delivery to the driver’s power demands.

TorqueFlite delivers crisp, quick gear changes
The 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 in the Ram TRX is paired to a robust TorqueFlite 8HP95 eight-speed automatic transmission. This versatile, well-developed, high-torque-capacity eight-speed transmission delivers quick acceleration and precise, crisp, quick gear changes, enhancing ride quality to luxury car levels with consistent performance and drivability.

To best match gear selection and shift points to the driver’s demands, the transmission software monitors inputs, such as engine torque gradients, throttle kick-down, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, detection of friction, downshifts and road grade.

Launch Control is standard with the 2021 Ram TRX. Launch Control manages tire slip while launching the vehicle to give the driver consistent straight-line acceleration. Wheel speed sensors watch for driveline-damaging wheel hop at launch and, in milliseconds, provide inputs to the powertrain control module to modify the engine torque to regain full grip.

The Ram TRX is also equipped with Jump Detection, which uses wheel speed and ride height sensors and accelerometers at each corner to identify when the vehicle is airborne and acts to prevent driveline-damaging power spikes.

Dynamic on-road drive mode configurations include:
  • Auto — Automatically adapts to any condition; uses 40/60 front/rear torque split
  • Sport — Transmission shift times are reduced by 50 percent versus Auto mode; stability control, four-wheel-drive system and steering systems are set for typical enthusiast driving style; paddle shifters are enabled and suspension is tightened up without increasing impact harshness to deliver increased vehicle performance capability over Auto mode; uses 30/70 torque split
  • Tow — Alters torque delivery off the line for greater smoothness and adjusts suspension to combat pitch and yaw to deliver maximum towing performance; uses 45/55 torque split

RamBar (82215959AC | $1,195): Adding a rugged, sporty design while increasing the versatility of the Ram 1500 TRX, the RamBar accessory bar easily mounts to the truck bed using stake pockets and includes tie downs for in-bed storage. The robust tubular design features a powder-coat, matte-black finish and is specifically engineered to work with Mopar off-road 5-inch LED lights.

Off-road LED lights (82215274AC | $595): Available to mount on top of the RamBar, a set of 5-inch LED off-road lights – each shining at 4,800 lumens – provide exceptionally bright, fully illuminating light for off-road driving. The cast-aluminum housing ensures proper heat dissipation and long-term durability. Also included are two light covers with the Mopar logo, a wiring harness and switch.

Bed-mounted spare-tire carrier (82216108AA | $995): Manufactured with thick-gauge steel and high-strength welded tubular construction, the bed-mounted spare-tire carrier features a base layer of corrosion protection, a painted E-coat and a black-powder finish for durability. The fully integrated carrier securely holds up to a 37-inch spare tire/wheel in severe off-road conditions and can be removed easily if the customer needs to use the full truck bed for standard utility purposes.

Off-road rock rails (82216078AB | $1,195): Engineered to meet stringent protection, loading and durability requirements both on-road and off-road, the aluminum rock rail sections are attached using high-strength steel brackets. A black-powder coating provides corrosion protection and seamlessly blends with the vehicle aesthetics, allowing for easy entry and exit on the integrated step pads.

Off-road running boards (82215508AC | $995): Constructed of lightweight cast aluminum with a rugged spray-in bedliner and an anti-slip texture coating, exact-matched running boards fit tightly to the vehicle with no drilling necessary.

Bed step (82216278AC | $395): Load-rated for up to 350 pounds, the bed step features an articulating arm that lowers for easy access to the truck bed and retracts to a stored position with a gentle push, giving an “out of the way” look within the bumper.

Bed rails with adjustable tie downs (82215285AB | $250): Constructed of anodized aluminum, bed rails attach to the inside walls of the truck bed and feature adjustable cleats that slide along the rail system in order to secure cargo of various sizes. Rails can accommodate sliding toolboxes, sport-utility bars and a cargo-bed divider (all sold separately).

Beadlock-capable wheel rings (P5160250AA | $205): Constructed of tough forged aluminum with a silver finish, the beadlock wheel ring clamps the outer tire bead to the rim of the optional beadlock-capable wheel, enabling maximum traction when lower tire pressures are needed during off-roading.

All-weather floor mats (82216412AA | $165): Designed with a bucket-style approach to provide full coverage of the carpet in the foot wells, the black mats are made of heavy-duty rubber and feature a red Ram logo. Pitch Night Engages Employees to Create New Connectivity and Infotainment Ideas
Borrowing from a familiar television show format, FCA’s innovation teams hosted the first Pitch Night program in June, engaging employees in creating, developing and presenting new ideas for connectivity and infotainment. More than 500 ideas were submitted with sky-is-the-limit creativity.

Online voting allowed employees to whittle down the original 500 ideas to 50 for advancement to the next round. Topic-focused leadership then picked the top 14 ideas from the remaining 50. Coaches and executive sponsors were assigned to the finalists to help guide prototype development and fine-tune the “pitch” as they prepared to present their ideas to a panel of judges, including FCA’s Chief Executive Officer Mike Manley, Chief Operating Officer Mark Stewart and several members of the executive leadership team.

Ultimately, the Know & Go mobile app was selected as the top winner for its originality, feasibility, viability and desirability. Since that time, Harris and Nguyen have worked with the cross-fuctional teams to bring their idea from concept to reality.
